I believe in coffee. I enjoy the benefits of the caffeine in the morning, and also the warm comforting aroma that fills my kitchen as I fall out of bed. Coffee is part of my morning ritual and also a treat for me. Every once and awhile, especially as the holiday season is drawing near, I indulge in one of those fufoo drinks at Starbucks, Peppermint Chocolate Mocha with extra whip and chocolate shavings on top. These are tasty drinks but... because of the lack of actual espresso they can hardly be classified as “coffee.” What interests me most is a nice hot cup of black coffee. Coffee that I know is fresh- not the gas station kind that has been brewing so long it is now burnt. I guess you could say I am a “coffee snob” because I believe life is too short to drink bad coffee.
Perhaps another reason I believe in coffee is because it brings people together. There are numerous occasions I can recall where I have met with friends, acquaintances, and especially my mom over a cup of coffee. I suppose the love I have for coffee was learned from my mom, as she has always has had her morning cup of coffee. She is a very busy lady, but every morning she will her time to enjoy this beverage at our kitchen table for a few peaceful minutes. Now that I have recently moved home from Minnesota, I too enjoy my morning coffee and time spent with her.
The most significant justification for my love of coffee is to support the third world country of Papua New Guinea. One company named Ethica Coffee was started by a missionary from my church, and has made a significant impact on their area. She educates the village workers on the chemistry and art of producing coffee. Ethica Coffee has provided jobs, education, hope, and economic support for this country in need. Similar to teaching about coffee, this passionate missionary teaches about the love of God. The villagers there are learning the love of Christ and getting saved with the help of a coffee ministry! Even more recently Papua New Guinea has separated from many old tribal practices; such as cannibalism and the killing of infants based on racial discrimination. With God this country is beginning to be transformed.
To sum it up I enjoy coffee for many of the reasons others do; the caffeine, the cozy feeling when you drink it, or maybe for the people it brings you close to. But I believe in coffee for the reason that God can use a simple thing, like coffee to encounter a nation. I believe that I get the opportunity to take part in the work
